HVAC Features

HVAC FeaturesCommon HVAC features today support convenience, effectiveness, and efficiency and extend system service life. HVAC technology has steadily evolved over the years, and today’s systems are more advanced than ever. That’s why investing in a new air conditioner or furnace today is virtually always an improvement over the unit it replaces. Even today’s basic standard units provide HVAC features that are a substantial upgrade over older existing units.

Here’s a miscellany of available features of HVAC systems circa 2022.

  • Higher SEER ratings. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, the metric that represents central AC energy efficiency. SEER continues to rise as cooling technology advances. A standard SEER rating is 13 or 14, while high-efficiency AC units now come with SEER ratings as high as 20. Higher SEER means lower operating costs but also a generally higher initial purchase price.
  • Variable speed circulation. HVAC system blowers traditionally operated at just two speeds: on and off. Today’s high-efficiency variable-speed HVAC blower runs almost continuously, automatically adjusting airflow volume to meet temperature requirements. This provides more effective and efficient heating and cooling at a lower operating cost.
  • Zoning. In many homes, one temperature doesn’t fit all rooms. A zoning system allows a single HVAC unit to support different temperatures in different rooms. The system utilizes automated dampers that open and close to adjust cooled or heated airflow, controlled by a computer that is linked to independent thermostats in each zone.
  • Smart thermostats. These units are fully programmable and allow all preset temperatures to be scheduled in advance. Many are also internet connected, allowing you to monitor indoor temperatures from any remote location as well as alter programmed settings. Really smart thermostats incorporate sensors that learn your daily habits and preferences to create the most efficient programmed schedule for you and everyone in your home.
